Looking Ahead, Legislature Sets Schedule for Remainder of 2014 Session

With the vast majority of the state enduring the winter storm, the legislature remained in adjournment. Members of the General Assembly will return on Monday, Feb. 17, for Legislative Day 22. As time progresses, the end of the 2014 legislative session nears. The calendar for the remaining legislative days has been set and can be viewed here.

ACCG Policy Council Expresses Concern with Gun Bill

House Bill 875 is the omnibus gun bill for the 2014 legislative session, lifting prohibitions on guns in churches, bars, schools and public housing and significantly decreasing penalties for weapons on campus and in airports, among many other provisions.  While taking no position on these legislative initiatives, the ACCG Policy Council voted this week to oppose three specific components of the bill which negatively impact local governments.

The “Big Budget”, HB 744, Will Move to the House Floor on Monday

For the first day back after the winter storm, the House will consider a major topic as HB 744 or the “Big Budget” will move to the House floor. HB 744 sets the state’s budget for FY 2015. ACCG has provided a breakdown of the proposed budget which can be accessed here.

Monitoring Legislation on the Go

The ACCG County Mobile App is equipped with many features that allow county officials to remain in the know, even when they are on the go! ACCG County enables you to monitor legislation that is tracked by the policy staff directly from your smartphone. This is easily done by opening the app on your phone- be sure to download it if you have not!- and scrolling over to the “Bills” section. You have the option of searching legislation by the bill number, legislative issue, or tracking level such as support or oppose in addition to others. Please use a 0 when searching for a bill until you download the latest version of the app which will be available in the next few days.
