Day 34: The End Is In Sight11882 on 3/14/2013
In two minutes flat, the House heard and passed HR 218, encouraging superintendents to make sure the Constitution is taught, 160-1 today.  The negative vote had nothing to do with the bill -- it was a "just say no" morning for that legislator.  That was the only education-related bill in either chamber.

Both chambers passed the schedule of the remaining six days of the session.  Sine die, the final day, will be Thursday, March 28th.  They will be in session Wednesday through Friday next week then finish it out Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Bills in Committee

Senate Education & Youth
The following bills got the needed "Do Pass" and were sent on to Senate Rules:
HB 131, changing the way dual credit is calculated for the HOPE scholarship, was amended in subcommittee to remove  a provision allowing a special education student to request that the Student Finance Commission weight their grades differently or waive the minimum grade point average requirement for HOPE.

HB 337, allowing a prescription for auto-injectable epinephrine to be written for a school

HB 354, relating to DECAL and child care centers

HB 537, prohibiting a county school board member in a certain population level from holding another county elected office, was reassigned to the State and Local Governmental Operations Committee.  In case anybody wondered, this bill is considered a clean up of the state code and is not aimed at anybody.

Senate Finance Committee
HB 211, a two-year exemption of the excise tax on motor fuel purchased by school districts, got a "Do Pass" and went to Senate Rules.

HB 197, amending provisions of the forestland protection grant program, was added to the agenda but discussion on two other bills got more complicated than seemed to be expected and the meeting ended before it was heard.

The General Assembly will reconvene Wednesday, March 20th at 10 AM
