SEPTEMBER 26-27, 2017

8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

MICHIGAN STATE POLICE HEADQUARTERS

7150 HARRIS DRIVE, DIMONDALE, MI 48821

The Sexual Assault Kit Initiative is pleased to announce a unique interactive training opportunity for prosecution, law enforcement, advocacy, and medical forensic exam providers led by a training team of national experts including Ret. Detective Sergeant Jim Markey, Dr. Linda Ledray, Misty Marra, and Patti Powers.

In this two-day event, attendees will learn how law enforcement, advocates, prosecutors, and medical providers can effectively engage with a reluctant witness and make challenging decisions through the entire judicial process from medical and crime scene evidence collection to trial. Attendees will engage in realistic simulations and role-plays as victims, suspects, and other participants.

Topics covered include:

  • Law enforcement/victim interview
  • Victim and rape crisis center advocates
  • Crime scene investigation and evidence collection
  • SANE exam
  • DNA analysis/crime laboratory
  • Suspect interview
  • Trial preparation
  • Trial testimony

There is no cost to attend the training.

Attendance is limited to 48 participants. Participants must be from one of the following four disciplines: 1) law enforcement; 2) advocacy; 3) prosecution; and 4) SANE or other medical providers who perform sexual assault medical forensic examinations. Priority will be given to participants from jurisdictions that submitted sexual assault kits under the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.

This training is MCOLES approved, and law enforcement agencies located more than 50 miles from the training may use 302 funds to pay for costs associated with mileage, meals, and lodging. A limited number of scholarships may also be available to pay for lodging for select teams from jurisdictions located more than 60 miles from the training that have submitted sexual assault kits under the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.
