Staff Analysis of the Legislation

Creating the Joint Study Committee on Indigent Defense composed of 16 members six of which are appointed by the Lt. Governor (four from the Senate one of which will serve as cochair) and one of which shall be an attorney with experience in criminal defense matters and one shall be a county commission chairperson.  Six members shall be appointed by the Speaker, five of whom shall be members of the House (one of which will serve as cochair) and one shall be an attorney with experience in criminal defense.  One member shall be a district attorney nominated by the Prosecuting Attorneys� Council and two members shall be superior court judges appointed by the executive committee of the Council of Superior Court Judges.  One member shall be the Chairperson of the Georgia Public Defenders Standards Council.
