Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SB 102 revises O.C.G.A. § 21-2-132, requiring each candidate for the office of judge of the superior court, Judge of the Court of Appeals, or Justice of the Supreme Court to file their notice of candidacy no earlier than the fourth Monday in April, and no later than the Friday following the fourth Monday in April. Each candidate for a county judicial office, a local school board office, or an office of a consolidated government and each candidate for federal or state office are required to follow the same notice of candidacy guidelines. SB 102 outlines the candidacy notice regulations following redistricting. SB 102 revises O.C.G.A. § 21-2-150 stipulating that whenever the primary occur during the same week of the national convention of either party, the general primary shall be conducted on the last Tuesday in July of each year. SB 102 revises O.C.G.A. § 21-2-385 by mandating that the period of advance voting shall only commence on the fourth Monday immediately prior to each primary or election. It also outlines the period for special runoff elections.
