Staff Analysis of the Legislation

HB 400 amends Article 2 of Chapter 13 of Title 16 of the O.C.G.A. by adding Code Section 16-13-56.1 that provides for definitions of opioids; prohibits a prescriber from issuing a prescription for opioids for pain without trying a non-opioid first and prohibits a prescription for more than a seven day supply. Prescribers must also explain the risks of opioid medication, accept any unused opioids for disposal and report any non-identifying data to the Department of Public health about the opioid prescriptions issued.
