SUMMARY:

Provides that schools shall be closed on November 11 of each year in honor of Veterans Day.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires that the State Board of Education provide that all Georgia schools close on November 11 of each year "to enable students, teachers, and administrators to participate in Veterans Day programs..."

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

  • Will require changes in some local school district calendars.
  • Forces an earlier start date in order to complete a semester before winter holidays. 
  • In some cases with school closed, student groups, bands, etc. will be unavailable for participation in Veterans Day ceremonies.
  • Restricts local board authority to set local school calendar.

EFFECTIVE DATE:

Upon signature of the Governor or upon becoming law without his signature.
