Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:
Requires local school districts to provide information about meningococcal meningitis to parents if other information on school health issues is being provided.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • If a local board of education provides information on immunizations, infectious diseases, medications, or other school health issues to parents and guardians of students in grades 6-12, then the following information about meningococcal meningitis disease and its vaccine shall be included:
    • A description of causes, symptoms, and means of transmission
    • A list of sources for additional information
    • Related recommendations issues by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • The Department of Education shall develop and make available to school districts such information.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

  • Expands responsibilities of school districts who are providing certain health information to parents of students.

EFFECTIVE DATE:

Upon approval by the Governor or upon becoming law without such approval.
