Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY: LC 33 3275

Requires the school calendar to begin after September 1 or Labor Day, whichever is earlier.  Year-round schools are exempt.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

  • Creates a state-wide uniform starting date.
  • Removes the ability of local districts, with feedback from the community and other stakeholders to set school calendars.
  • May push first semester exams to after Christmas holidays.
  • Many school districts have adopted calendars for several years in the future.
  • A priority for the hospitality industry.

EFFECTIVE DATE: July 1, 2010
