Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  Provides for a farm to school program to promote the sale of Georgia grown farm products to schools.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • requires the Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Department of Education to facilitate and promote the sale of Georgia grown products to school districts
  • a data base of farmers wishing to sell local products shall be maintained
  • establishes a "Georgia Grown for Georgia Kids" week with promotions in classrooms and other locales
  • encourages guidance and training for food service workers in utilizing Georgia products

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

  • costs of coordination and facilitation of such a program are not defined
  • it would appear that participation in the program is voluntary
  • the Federal government already provides for a farm to school program

EFFECTIVE DATE: Upon approval by the General Assembly and Governor.
