Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY: LC 33 6023 Requires the following to be taught as part of the United States and world history curriculum:
- history and content of the Declaration of Independence including:
- national sovereignty
- natural law
- self-evident truth
- equality of all persons
- limited government
- popular sovereignty
- inalienable rights of life liberty and property
- history, meaning, significance and effect of the provisions of the United States Constitution and amendments with an emphasis on the Bill of Rights
- arguments in support of adopting our republican form of government as embodied in the Federalist Papers
- flag education
- elements of civil government: federal, state, counties, municipalities, school systems and special districts
- history of the United States (viewed as factual not as constructed; knowable; teachable and testable) including
- period of discovery
- early colonies
- War for Independence
- westward expansion
- world wars
- civil rights movement
- history of the Holocaust
- history of African-Americans
- study of Hispanic, womens, and native American's contributions to the United States
- sacrifices that veterans have made in serving our country (instruction to occur on or before Veteran's Day and Memorial Day and utilize local veterans)
EFFECTIVE DATE: Upon approval by the General Assembly and Governor.
