SUMMARY: LC 33 6111S33 6194S Adds a new category to the list of qualified students who are to be considered for enrollment in charter schools.
REQUIREMENTS: New categories:
- Educationally disadvantaged students: defined as students who are economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities migrant students, limited English proficient students, neglected or delinquent students, and homeless students.
- such students may be provided an increased chance of admission through a weighted lottery of permitted by the school's charter
- Conversion charter schools and state chartered special schools may give preference to applicants in one or more of the following categories in the order specified in the charter:
- sibling of a student already enrolled in the charter
- student whose parent is a member of the governing board, teacher, professional, or other employee of the chaster
- student enrolled in the school prior to conversion as a charter
- student residing in the charter attendance zone
- student who matriculate from a pre-K program affiliated with the school
EFFECTIVE DATE: Upon approval by the General Assembly and Governor.
