Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  LC 256452  Requires insurance companies to provide certain coverage of autism spectrum disorders including habilitative or rehabilitative services, counseling services, and therapy services.  The policy shall provide for:

  • coverage of assessments, evaluations, or tests by a licensed physician or psychologist
  • coverage for the treatment of autism spectrum disorders when it is determined by a licensed physician or psychologist that the treatment is medically necessary health care
  • the policy shall not limit the number of visits
  • coverage may be limited to $35,000 annually
  • coverage is provided under certain circumstances for individuals who are six years of age or under 

EFFECTIVE DATE:  Upon approval by the General Assembly and Governor.
