SUMMARY: LC 33 7153   LC 33 7280S   LC 33 7422S

Would require local school systems to conduct "multi-tiered system of supports", a systemic, continuous-improvement framework in which data based problem solving and decision making is practiced across all levels of the educational system  a vision screening, hearing screening, and speech-language assessment prior to expelling or suspending a student in kindergarten through third grade for 5 or more consecutive or cumulative days; unless student possessed a weapon, drugs or other dangerous instrument or the student's behavior endangers the safety of other students or school personnel. If the parent does not give permission for the screening to be conducted, or if a screening had been done in the last six months, the local school system would not be required to conduct a screening. In addition, prior to assigning any student with an IEP to out of school suspension for five or more consecutive days, the school shall convene an IEP or Section 504 meeting.
