This is "The Georgia Civics Renewal Act" which would create the Georgia Commission on Education. It would consist of 17 members with the Governor designating the chair:
- one member from the Senate majority
- one from the Senate minority
- one from the House majority
- one from the House minority
- one Justice of the Supreme Court
- Attorney General
- one designee from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce
- one designee from the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
- State Superintendent or his designee
- one member appointed by the President of the Senate
- one member appointed by the Speaker of the House
- one member appointed by the Governor
- two former or current government or civics teachers appointed by the Governor
- one representative from the Association of County Commissioners of GA (ACCG)
- one representative from the Georgia Municipal Association
- one representative from the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement appointed by the Governor
The Commission shall periodically review the conditions, needs, issues, and problems related to civics education in GA, issue annually a report on it to the General Assembly, and recommend any action or legislation which they deem necessary or appropriate.
The head of the social studies program at the Department of Education shall report annually to the Commission on the conditions, needs, issues, and problems of the program.
