SUMMARY:  LC 49 0692

Amends code section 20-2-295 to expand the definition of "military student" for purposes of public school choice within a school district. Current law defines those students as children of school age of a military service member who lives on a military base or in military housing.  This bill would change that to a dependent school aged child of a military service member who within the previous 12 months has received official military orders to transfer into or within the state.

School districts would be required to allow a military student who was enrolled in and attended a public school for part of the year to complete that school year even if the parent or guardian moved. If a military student was in 11th grade in the current year, they would be allowed to complete that year and their senior year.

Parents are responsible for transportation to any school other than the one the student would have been zoned for.

EFFECTIVE DATE:

2022-2023 school year
