SUMMARY:  LC 44 1578

This is a constitutional amendment to allow local boards of education to call for a referendum vote to authorize assessment of homestead property of those 65 and older at 20% of its fair market value for purposes of property taxes for school districts.

The ballot question would be:

Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to authorize the General Assembly to provide by law for local referenda to authorize assessment of residential homesteaded property owned by individuals of certain ages at 20 percent of such property's fair market value regarding local school district taxes for educational purposes and to provide that such assessments may not be repealed except by local law once authorized? 

The enabling legislation is HB 887.

EFFECTIVE DATE:

If passed by 2/3 vote in the House and Senate it would be on the November 2022 ballot. If passed by the voters, it would be effective January 1, 2023.
