SUMMARY:  LC 49 0875

The bill allows state recognition of an accrediting agency as a reliable authority as to the quality of education offered in a secondary school only if the accrediting agency meets criteria set by the State Board of Education, demonstrates the ability and experience to operate as a recognized accrediting agency in the state, has the principal purpose of accreditation of secondary schools, has voluntary membership, consistently applies and enforces assessment criteria that ensure quality instruction among other requirements.

It requires the accrediting agency follow due process and transparency procedures.

Upon request by a local board, the State Board of Education would be authorized to provide accreditation and related services for that district's elementary and middle schools.  The local board would have to compensate the State Board. Accreditation of an elementary or middle school would be recognized by the state only if it was done by the State Board.
