Staff Analysis of the Legislation

This bill would amend Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to give the DOE another year to complete development of the curricula for the 16 prescribed courses of study until the 2013-2014 school year; to require the SBOE to prescribe a minimum course of study in career education K-12 with specified contents; and to change the mandated assessment for post-secondary readiness from 10th grade to the end of 11th grade. Students in 11th and 12th grades who fail to meet the readiness standards would be required to take transitional courses in reading, writing and math with common standards, syllabi, and instructional materials. A state-wide process would be required for determining how successful completion of those transitional courses would guarantee that students will meet the readiness standards.
