Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:

            This bill is similar to HB 193 but is more specific in the flexibility it gives systems to determine their annual calendars.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A full day for kindergarten would be defined as 810 hours annually.
  • A full day for other grades would be as follows:
    • Grades 1-3, 810 hours;
    • Grades 4-5, 900 hours;
    • Grades 6-12, 990 hours
  • Each LBOE would define its school year and instructional day with the ambivalent requirement currently in the law of beginning “in or about September and ending in or about June.
  • School nutrition personnel’s work year would be defined as 1520 hours annually rather than 190 days for 8 hours.
