SUMMARY:

This bill would amend Code Section 20-2-690.1 to require parents who become residents of the state to enroll their child(ren) in a public or private or home school within 60 days.  Formerly the child was responsible for enrolling in school.  It adds to the definition of excused absences any determined by the General Assembly and the LBOE.  It removes the tedious paperwork and procedures currently required when a child reaches 5 unexcused absences.  It adds that parents of children with excessive absences may be reported to the proper prosecuting agency.  If school officials know that a parent has knowingly violated the mandatory attendance law, it would be their mandated responsibility to report the case to the proper prosecuting agency.
