Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:

            This bill would amend Part 9 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to provide grants for pilot projects to extend the school year.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Three-year grants for one system (6,000 or less enrollment) and one school not in that system (with the system’s BOE in agreement)
  • Would have to agree to a 200 or 220 day school year
  • Subject to General Assembly appropriations
  • Twenty percent greater than normal funding for 200 day calendar
  • Forty percent greater than normal funding for 220 day calendar
  • Personnel other than 12 month employees would receive
    • 10% increase in salary for 200 day year
    • 20% increase in salary for 220 day year
  • BOE must hold at least 1 public hearing, and they would have to show that a majority of parents had not expressed disapproval
  • First-come; first serve applications
  • Funding would begin in FY 2011, and the lengthened school year would have to begin 2010-2011.
