SUMMARY:  This bill would amend Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 to change the organization of middle schools, required programs and scheduling.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Any school which houses grades 6, 7 or 8 or any combination would qualify for the middle school program (and the accompanying funding), as long as they meet SBOE standards for the program.
  • Five hours of instruction in the core and other SBOE required programs would still be mandated, but the requirement to serve remedial students in the core with a priority on reading and math would be removed.
  • All exceptions to the five hour instructional requirement would be prohibited.
