This resolution calls for the affirmation of and sets out the factual development of the Common Core Standards with the following points:
1. Georgia led a bipartisan coalition of 47 states to develop the standards:
2. Former Governor Sonny Perdue led the National Governors Association in endorsing the standards;
3. A group of education experts worked on developing standards needed for success in college and careers;
4. The Common Core GA Performance Standards (CCGPS) were drafted and posted for public comment in 2012;
5. Georgia, 44 other states, D.C., 2 territories, and the Department of Defense schools have adopted the standards;
6. They were heavily based on our own GPS;
7. They will ensure GA students have equal access to knowledge and skills needed beyond high school;
8. They create collaboration across states to improve education;
9. They do not represent a curriculum—local flexibility is still allowed in how to teach them;
10. No personally identifiable information about individual students will be protected and not shared with any other state or the federal government;
11. The federal government played no role in their development, nor has any state been penalized for not adopting or implementing them;
12. A broad range of stakeholders across Georgia has supported the standards;
13. They allow parents to know more about their children’s status and empowers them to participate in their education. |
