Would establish a loan forgiveness program for postsecondary education loans for teachers who agree to teach in a public school designated as a turn around school.  

To Qualify a teacher must: 

  • Have a bachelors degree in education from a college within Georgia. 
  • Have an outstanding loan balance from a college within Georgia.
  • Agree to teach mathematics, science, special education or any other subject matter determined to be in high demand 

 

Would establish a teacher recruitment and retention program for a refundable income tax credit for teachers who agree to teach in certain rural schools or turnaround eligible schools. The state board will establish a teacher recruitment and retention program. In order to entice new and experienced teachers to accept a position in a rural or turnaround school they will offer a tax credit to each participating teacher in the amount of $3K per school year for no more than five consecutive school years. 

EFFECTIVE DATE:

July 1, 2020, if passed.
