SUMMARY:

Would require computer science courses be offered in middle and high school. Beginning in the 2021-2022 school year each local school system shall have at least one high school in its school system that offers a computer science class; would require that all middle schools in the school system offer instruction in exploratory computer science. Each state charter school that has high school students will offer a course in computer science and each charter school that serves middle school students will offer a class in exploratory computer science.

Each local school system may provide that all elementary schools in their district offer instruction in exploratory computer science and each state charter school that serves elementary students may offer instruction in exploratory computer science. 

Beginning in 2022-2023 school year each local school system would be required to have at least 50% of their high schools offer a course in computer science and in the 2023-2024 school year, all high schools would be required to offer a course in computer science. 

Grants will be provided to eligible school systems to provide professional development classes for teachers of computer science courses. 

 

EFFECTIVE DATE:

2021-2022 school year if passed.
