The bill adds a new code section to authorize local boards of education to provide instruction in lifeguarding and aquatic instruction in grades 9-12 beginning in the 2025-26 school year.

No later than January 1, 2025, the State Board shall adopt content standards for such a course. Local boards may establish a curriculum for instruction in lifeguarding and aquatic safety. If developed it must include elements listed in the bill. The curriculum must provide sufficient training to enable students to be qualified to work as lifeguards upon completion. 

Local schools may partner with other entities to provide access to training facilities. On or after July 1, 2025, satisfactory completion of the course may be accepted by the State Board for one-half unit of elective credit.
