SUMMARY: LC 49 1102

Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, school districts shall require all students age 8-18 to undergo a suicide screening at the beginning of each school year.  The bill requires the Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, the Suicide Prevention Program established under 37-1-27, and suicide prevention experts to develop or identify one or more age-appropriate screening tools.

Local school districts would be required to refer any students as appropriate, to mental health services or programs based on the results of the screenings.
