| Bill Lamb is an American politician who has served as a Republican member of the Alabama House of Representatives for District 62 since November 9, 2022. Born around 1953, he is a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he currently resides and maintains his district office at 7402 Marigold Lane. At approximately 72 years old, Lamb represents parts of Southeastern Tuscaloosa County including Cottondale, Duncanville, Coaling, Brookwood, Lake View and Taylorville.
Before entering politics, Lamb built a distinguished career in public service as the Chief Financial Officer for the Tuscaloosa County Commission, a position he held for nearly 39 years from 1982 until his retirement in 2021. When he began his tenure as county accountant in February 1982, Tuscaloosa County faced significant financial challenges with a $1.5 million debt and major factories and businesses closing throughout the early 1980s. Through sound financial management and collaboration with county commissioners over nearly four decades, Lamb helped transform the county's fiscal situation from borrowing money to meet payroll to maintaining over $40 million in budget surplus with no long-term debt by the time of his retirement.
Lamb graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in business-related studies. His educational background in business management informed his approach to both county financial management and later legislative service. During his county career, he oversaw the financing of significant capital projects including the Tuscaloosa County Jail, Juvenile Detention Center, and renovations to the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse.
In 2022, following the announcement that incumbent Representative Rich Wingo would not seek re-election, Lamb decided to run for the Alabama House of Representatives District 62 seat. He won the Republican primary unopposed and defeated Democratic opponent Brenda Cephus in the general election with 73.9% of the vote, receiving 8,803 votes to Cephus's 3,094. His decision to enter politics was motivated by a desire to serve rather than career advancement, as he stated he "didn't need a job" or "another career" but wanted to "find a place to serve".
In the Alabama House of Representatives, Lamb serves on multiple committees including the Ways and Means General Fund Committee, Boards, Agencies and Commissions Committee, and Fiscal Responsibility Committee. He is also a member of the Joint Transportation Committee, Permanent Joint Legislative Committee on Finances and Budget, Tuscaloosa County Legislation Committee, License Plates Legislative Oversight Committee, Sunset Committee, and Alabama Oil and Gas Study Committee. His committee assignments reflect his extensive background in government finance and budgeting.
Lamb has been active in sponsoring legislation since taking office. Notable bills he has sponsored include HB509 regarding game breeder licenses and deer management, HB600 which expanded sales and use tax exemptions for certain educational foundations including the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences Foundation, and HB266 known as the Restoring Educational Advancement of Completing High School (REACH) Act, which provides nontraditional high school diploma options for students 17 years and older. All three bills were signed into law during his first term.
In his personal life, Lamb is married to DuRhonda Ashcraft Lamb and they have 4 children. The family operated a traveling ministry during Lamb's county career, performing concerts at churches and venues across multiple states. This ministry work demonstrated his long-standing commitment to faith-based community service alongside his public sector career. His current term in the Alabama House of Representatives ends on November 4, 2026. |
