Bio

Matthew Wilson is a trial lawyer in Brookhaven and former public-school teacher. He was elected in 2018 to represent House District 80, covering parts of Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Chamblee, and Atlanta. He is only the second openly gay man to ever be elected to the Georgia General Assembly and serves on the Judiciary, Education, and Agriculture & Consumer Affairs Committees. Matthew is a product of Georgia public schools from kindergarten through law school. He attended the University of Georgia on a HOPE scholarship and after graduating, he taught sixth-grade math and science at a Title I school as part of the national Teach For America program. Matthew returned to the University of Georgia for law school where he was named the outstanding trial advocate for his class. Matthew is a partner with the law firm Akin & Tate and has been recognized as one of Atlanta's top young trial lawyers. Super Lawyers magazine has named Matthew as a "Rising Star" three years in a row. Matthew previously served as the legislative director for the State Bar Association. He serves on the board of the Stonewall Bar Association and is a former board member of the Red Clay Democrats and Georgia Watch, a consumer rights organization. He was a member of the 2017 Class of LEAD Atlanta. Matthew lives in Brookhaven and is a member at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta.
