Bio

I was born to a father working as an orderly at a mental institution. He made minimum wage - $3.35 an hour in 1981. At night, he studied in our basement apartment and used a cardboard box as his desk. He believed education was the only way to escape poverty. My resourceful mother raised five independent daughters. She took us to church every Sunday and made sure we always gave back to the community. My family inspired me to start my own nonprofit to educate and empower girls in under-resourced schools. I gave up the security of my job, including health insurance, because I believe advocating for youth is an investment for all Georgia families. I will work tirelessly because health insurance, livable wages, and quality education should not be bargaining chips for any person. In 2017, I served as chief-of-staff for Democrat Representative Sam Park under the Gold Dome. I drafted legislative resolutions, tracked legislation, and developed policy recommendations. In 2016, I served as campaign manager for State Representative Sam Park. We defeated a three-term Republican incumbent, electing the first openly gay, Asian-American man to the Georgia General Assembly. In 2016, I served on the host committee for the national Facing Race conference, where I helped curate a bus tour, Atlanta- A Tale of Two Cities. I worked with high school teachers and undocumented students to put together a public art exhibition on Buford Highway highlighting the importance of cultural identity. As a 2015 fellow with the Georgia Women's Policy Institute, I lobbied to pass the Pursuing Justice for Rape Victims Act. Since its passage, thousands of untested rape kits have been tested and DNA matches have been made in CODIS. During my term with the Atlanta Regional Commission, I worked with young professionals to address public education in Atlanta, focusing on disparity between communities in the region. I developed a solid policy foundation during my three-year tenure at GBPI, where we fought for Georgians to have access to health care and for our school children to receive enough funding for 180-day school years and smaller classroom sizes. Bee is bilingual and speaks English and Vietnamese. Bee is a 2012 graduate of Andrew Young School of Policy studies, where she earned her MPA with a focus on Finance and Management. Bee earned a Master of Arts with a concentration in English Literature when she was 23. Recently, she enrolled in classes at Emory Continuing Education and Callandwolde. Her favorite genre is Creative Nonfiction. For the past seven years in a row, Bee has run the Atlanta Thanksgiving Half Marathon and the Publix Half Marathon. In 2014, Bee made a resolution to drive less and became a bike commuter. An avid MARTA user, Bee lived her first three years (1999-2002) in Atlanta without a car. She takes transit to the Georgia State Capitol.
