State Representative Vance Smith, Jr. represents House District 133, which includes portions of
Harris, Muscogee and Troup counties. Vance resides in Harris County and received his
bachelor's degree from Columbus College, which is now Columbus State University.
Vance owns and operates Vance Smith Contracting & Consulting, LLC, which provides business
development services for construction and engineering companies in Georgia. Previously, Vance
was president and CEO of Vance Smith Construction Company, which was founded in 1974.
Vance served as a Harris County commissioner from 1987 to 1990 and was chairman during his
last two years on the Harris County Commission. First elected to the Georgia House of
Representatives in 1992, Vance served for 17 years in the House and was chairman of the House
Transportation Committee for five years. Upon leaving the House in 2009, Vance became the
commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and remained the
commissioner until fall of 2011. Reelected to the Georgia House in 2018, Vance currently serves
as Vice Chairman of the Natural Resources & Environment Committee and the Appropriations
Subcommittee on Transportation. He also serves on the Budget & Fiscal Affairs Oversight,
Economic Development & Tourism, Motor Vehicles, Transportation, Urban Affairs and Ways &
Means committees.
Vance has been married to Michele, a former teacher, for 47 years. They have three children, Bo,
Suzanne and Kip, as well as seven grandsons. |
