Bio

Jon Burns was first elected to the Georgia State House of Representatives in 2004, and has served as the House Majority Leader since 2015. He represents the 159th legislative district of Georgia that serves Screven County and portions of Effingham and Bulloch Counties. He is currently serving his eighth two-year term of office. Majority Leader Burns spends his time working with state and local officials on constituent issues and legislative policy for the House Republican Caucus. He works to bring sound environmentally balanced economic development, world class healthcare, quality education, and improved transportation to Georgia. He sits on the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs; Appropriations; Economic Development and Tourism; Ethics; Game, Fish & Parks; Rules; and Transportation Committees and as an Ex Officio member of all other House committees. No stranger to public service, Burns was the 12th Congressional District member on the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) Board prior to serving in the State House. Burns was born and raised in Effingham County. He graduated from Effingham County High School and earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Georgia Southern College. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from John Marshall Law School. Jon and his wife, Dayle, live on the family farm in northern Effingham County. Dayle is a retired educator. Jon is an active member and Sunday School Superintendent at Mizpah United Methodist Church. They have two grown sons, two lovely daughter-in-laws, and five beautiful grandchildren.
