Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes, a Democrat, was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2022. She represents Senate District 7, serving portions of Gwinnett county. Sen. Islam Parkes sits on the Senate Committees on Banking and Financial Institutions, Children and Families, Science and Technology and Veterans, Military and Homeland Security. Sen. Islam Parkes is the co-chair of the Georgia Women's Legislative Caucus. She is also the Vice-Chair of the Gwinnett Senate legislative delegation. Sen. Islam Parkes is a member of Georgia's first ever Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus and Hispanic Caucus. She is also a member of the Georgia Black Caucus and Working Families Caucus. As the daughter of working-class immigrants from Bangladesh, Senator Islam Parkes grew up watching her parents work long hours and juggle multiple jobs, often struggling to make ends meet. Sen. Islam Parkes Islam Parkes takes pride in her upbringing, which instilled in her both grit and empathy. In 2022, she made history by becoming the youngest woman and the first Muslim woman ever elected to office. Representing Gwinnett County, the fourth most diverse county in America, Senator Parkes is honored to serve such a vibrant and dynamic community. Sen. Islam Parkes is a proud product of Gwinnett County public schools, graduating from Central Gwinnett High School before earning her business degree from Georgia State University. Prior to running for office, she dedicated her life and career to advancing progressive ideals in Georgia through civic engagement at the local, state, and national level. Sen. Islam Parkes' personal experiences have taught her how to strategically work on issues and have given her valuable lessons on how to work through bi-partisan efforts to get things done for the people of Georgia.
