Bio

Jackie's commitment to community leadership took root during the first 10 years of life as she watched her mother and father, Darrell and Betty Strong work for community improvements. The family dining room table was a center for strategy sessions and lively discussions about improving the lives of all people. Jackie learned the importance of listening to people and working to understand their needs. She learned what it meant to care. Jackie was born and raised in Sioux City Iowa. She earned a bachelor's degree from Briar Cliff University and a master's degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She retired from Northwest AEA after 34 years as a speech-language pathologist. During that time, Jackie and her husband, Dennis owned and operated a clothing business. Jackie was elected in 2008 as a Woodbury County Supervisor and served eight years. As chairwoman of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, Smith worked with business leaders to bring one of Iowa's largest economic development projects to Woodbury County. "In the Iowa Senate, I will work to bring business to Iowa, but not on the backs of the working class and our most vulnerable citizens. "That means investing more resources in our community colleges, job training and apprenticeship to ensure that more workers are ready to fill good-paying jobs today, tomorrow and next year." The people of Woodbury County are interested in having the Legislature focus more energy on improving K-12 schools for Iowa children and grandchildren, ensuring access to affordable health for more Iowans, restoring the rights and dignity of working class families, and expanding access to cultural and recreational opportunities.
