| Matt Hall is serving his second term as state representative for the people of south and central Calhoun County and eastern Kalamazoo County.
Matt is chairman of the House Tax Policy Committee. In this role, Matt works to save residents and small-business owners across Michigan on their taxes as the committee examines issues related to taxes on business, income, and both real and personal property.
Recent committee work has seen Matt fight for a fair playing field for small businesses - moving legislation which saves them hundreds of millions of dollars collectively on federal taxes by allowing them to claim state and local deductions at the federal level. He has also spearheaded legislation exempting services such as delivery and installation from sales tax.
Matt was appointed chairman of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic during the 2019-20 legislative term, featuring members from both the House and Senate. The bipartisan committee examined the efficiency and response of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and her administration to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hall worked to hold Gov. Whitmer and her administration accountable as executive orders were issued and both lives and livelihoods throughout the state were impacted.
Matt was elected chairman of the House Republican caucus by his colleagues for the 2021-22 legislative term. He was named the 2020 House Member of the Year by Michigan Information & Research Service Inc. (MIRS), a popular Capitol news outlet. Said MIRS editor Kyle Melinn when discussing why Hall was chosen- "COVID-19 was the story of the year. Matt Hall was the face of the Republicans' response. Nobody held more hearings. They were effective in drawing out issues."
Part of Matt's work on the Joint Select Committee involved hearings with the state's Unemployment Insurance Agency to get answers for millions of people across Michigan who struggled for months to get the unemployment benefits they were eligible for. The committee also explored how the agency responded to fraud and examined decisions the agency made that contributed to increased fraud.
Matt also looked into the state's policy of deliberately placing COVID-19 patients into the same nursing homes as some of our state's most vulnerable seniors. Rather than jeopardize the health and safety of our seniors, he fought for a smarter plan to protect those living in nursing homes.
In addition to the Joint Select Committee, Matt served as House Oversight Committee chairman, where he worked to ensure state government was transparent and accountable to the people it served. He currently serves on the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, House Insurance Committee and House Regulatory Reform Committee in addition to chairing the House Tax Policy Committee. As a legislator, Matt has helped workers, families and local businesses across Michigan get through an unprecedented time by approving targeted and effective pandemic relief measures.
Professionally, Matt is an attorney who previously worked as West Michigan Liaison for the Michigan Attorney General's office. He also worked in the private sector for a combat vehicle propulsion manufacturer.
Matt graduated with honors from Western Michigan University's Haworth College of Business and earned his Juris Doctor in Advanced Constitutional Advocacy from WMU Cooley Law School. He currently resides in Comstock Township. |
