Sam Sutton is a Democratic member of the New York State Senate, representing the 22nd District, which encompasses neighborhoods in southern Brooklyn, including Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, and Sheepshead Bay. He assumed office on May 27, 2025, following a special election victory on May 20, 2025, where he secured approximately 67% of the vote, defeating Republican candidate Nachman Caller. Born in 1949, Sutton is a lifelong Brooklyn resident with deep roots in the Sephardic Jewish community. He has dedicated over 30 years to nonprofit leadership, notably serving as President of Sephardic Bikur Holim, a prominent social service organization. Additionally, he co-founded and currently chairs the Sephardic Community Federation, advocating for the needs of Sephardic Jews in New York. His extensive involvement also includes roles with the Sephardic Torah Learning Center, Teach NYS, and as a trustee at NYU Langone Medical Center. In the State Senate, Sutton focuses on issues pertinent to his district and community. His legislative agenda includes- Education- Advocating for increased funding for both public and nonpublic schools, including yeshivas, and supporting educational initiatives that benefit all students. Public Safety- Enhancing community safety through support for law enforcement and community-based initiatives. Housing and Economic Development- Promoting affordable housing solutions and supporting small businesses to stimulate local economic growth. Healthcare- Ensuring access to affordable healthcare services for all constituents, with a focus on mental health and senior care. Sutton is known for his commitment to public service and community engagement. He and his wife, Nancy, have been foster parents to 14 children, including one with special needs, reflecting their dedication to family and community welfare. In a ceremony rich with heritage, Sutton was sworn into office using a rare copy of the Keter Aram Soba, a sacred Bible with centuries of historical and religious importance, symbolizing his deep connection to his heritage and values.
