Bio

Texas State Representative Jim Murphy represents House District 133 in West Houston. In his seventh term, Murphy serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Higher Education and sits on the Ways and Means Committee. Murphy is the Chairman of the House Republican Caucus and the Chairman of the Harris County Legislative Delegation. Murphy is the former Chairman of the House on Pensions, Investments and Financial Services, Special Purpose Districts, and Corrections committees. Murphy's legislative record focuses on expanding the economy, ensuring public safety, improving education and empowering taxpayers. He has been named "Legislator of the Year" by organizations representing local governments, public charter schools, and private business. Prior to serving in the Legislature, Murphy was twice elected to the HCC Board of Trustees and has served on numerous boards in the community including the Houston West Chamber of Commerce, West Houston Medical Center, the Houston Association of Commercial Real Estate Professionals, and the Urban Land Institute. Murphy's community service also includes work with the Jaycees, where he previously served as Texas State President. He is a founding member and past Vice Chair of the Alief Education Foundation and was appointed to the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute's Advisory Council by the University of Texas Board of Regents. Representative Murphy was raised in West Houston and is a graduate of Strake Jesuit and UT Austin. He and his wife, Dr. Kathleen Murphy and are members of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Together, they have two incredible sons and two wonderful daughters-in-law.
