Bio

Dan Johnson grew up on a farm in Eastern Nebraska. This is where he learned many of life's lessons, especially the value of hard work. He is the first person in the generations of his family to graduate from college. Dan has three degrees from colleges and universities in Nebraska- Bachelor's Degree from Peru State Teachers College, Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and a fourth degree, a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership. Dan has been an educator for 49 years, 42 years as an administrator. Most recently he served as the Director of Edith Bowen Laboratory School on the campus of Utah State University and as the Assistant Superintendent for the Tooele County School District. Previously, Dan served as principal at Mount Logan Middle School for 17 years. Dan has had the opportunity to speak at several state, regional, and national conferences. Topics have ranged from Effective Leadership Practice, Parent Partnership Programs (Johns Hopkins University), Powerful Teaching and Learning Strategies, to Data Informed Decision Making. He has been a trainer for the Utah State Department of Education Accreditation Program (Collaborating for Student Achievement) and led teams on site visits for school improvement. Dan has been the architect behind curriculum design that emphasizes technology integration, and he has created several programs that engage students and parents in powerful experienced based learning opportunities. As an educator, he has been particularly interested in creating opportunities for students to form meaning from the experiences they have. Dan has studied adaptive testing models that are used to measure student growth and simultaneously inform instruction for classroom teachers. As a resident of Logan, Dan has served on neighborhood councils, mayor's councils, President of the Park and Recreation Advisory Board, and as a Republican State Delegate. Dan has been the recipient of several awards including Utah Principal of the Year, Runner-up for National Principal of the Year, Governor's "Point of Light" for his volunteer service to the State of Utah, and the Utah Council of the International Reading Association "Reading Principal of the Year." His contributions to education were recognized when he received the prestigious "Jon M. Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education." Dan has been invited to the White House in Washington, D.C, on two occasions. He was recognized for his contributions to education and had the opportunity to meet with federal government officials. Dan and his wife, Carol, have seven children. All of them have been educated in the public schools, colleges, and universities of America.
