| Ben DeSmidt is a Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 65th District since January 6, 2025. His district encompasses much of Kenosha and parts of Pleasant Prairie.
Born and raised in Wisconsin, DeSmidt earned a bachelor's degree in Classics from the University of Chicago in 1995. He later obtained a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University in 2006.
Before entering politics, DeSmidt served as an associate professor of Classics and Great Ideas at Carthage College from 2005 to 2020. In 2022, he joined the board of trustees at Gateway Technical College. He is also a small business owner, co-owning Union Park Tavern and Pavle's Lounge in Kenosha.
DeSmidt entered the political arena following the retirement of longtime Representative Tod Ohnstad. With Ohnstad's endorsement, he secured the Democratic nomination by defeating Kyle Flood in the August 2024 primary with nearly 70% of the vote. He went on to win the general election in November 2024, defeating Republican Brian Gonzales with approximately 53% of the vote.
In the Assembly, DeSmidt focuses on education, economic development, and community well-being. He emphasizes the importance of supporting local businesses, improving infrastructure, and ensuring that schools have the necessary resources. |
