| Elected to the California State Senate in a special election in 2015, Senator Steve Glazer won re-election to a full four-year term in November, 2016 by winning 67 percent of the vote in the 7th District.
Senator Glazer has worked to advance progressive policies, building a record of achievement toward serving the needs of the poor, the rights of immigrants and of communities of color. He has a long record of defending Californians against gun violence, authoring the "Bullet Button" bill to thwart gunmakers from exploiting a loophole in our state's assault weapons ban. He stood up for victims of police violence by voting for higher use of force standards for police. He has supported measures to increase Californians' access to health care, voted to raise the minimum wage and to ensure financial support to infants born while their families are receiving CalWORKs grants.
Senator Glazer has been a strong voice on the environment, casting important votes on such issues as California's fight against global warming by setting new targets to reduce emissions. He also has voted for new standards to promote clean energy through renewable energy sources. He authored a tax-relief bill to encourage water conservation, and voted to block the federal government from drilling oil off our pristine coastline.
He has also voted to protect California workers against federal rollbacks of labor rights, while also voting to prohibit the federal government from improper attempts to deny rights to immigrants. He has authored legislation to offer financial relief to renters and supported other measures to protect their rights against landlords who try to gouge them. And he voted for $3 billion in funding for affordable housing and helping the homeless.
Senator Glazer has led the fight for improving the safety and efficiency in public transportation, authoring legislation to create an inspector general over BART. He also secured $5 million for east bay parks and continues to push for solutions that preserve Tesla as permanent open space.
Senator Glazer has supported people's ability to own small businesses, getting signed into law the first-in-the-nation truth-in-lending bill for small businesses. He has voted to create a tax credit for businesses that improve their accessibility to the disabled.
Education is a top priority for Senator Glazer, who has voted to provide higher education opportunities for more students by opening up thousands of new slots at the University of California and the California State University systems. He also helped shepherd a $15 billion education bond to that will go onto the ballot in March 2020.
Senator Glazer has received recognition and honors from Planned Parenthood, Equality California, League of Conservation Voters, Veterans, Agriculture, Easter Seals, among others.
Senator Glazer serves as Chairman of the Business, Professions & Economic Development; Chairman of Senate Select Committee on Student Success; and is a member of the Agriculture, Education, Governmental Organization, and Insurance committees.

Senator Glazer previously served as a city council member and three-time mayor of Orinda. A lifelong environmental advocate, he led efforts that raised hundreds of millions of dollars to permanently protect open space in California and 25 other states.
A former senior advisor to California's Governor, Jerry Brown, Senator Glazer worked with Gov. Brown to help return California to solid financial footing in the midst of the Great Recession. He also served as an appointed California State University Trustee, working on limiting tuition increases and lowering administrative costs at CSU.
Senator Glazer is married to Melba Muscarolas, an AT&T executive. They have two daughters. Senator Glazer earned his bachelor's degree from San Diego State University where he served as Student Body President.
Senate District 7 is based in Northern California's Contra Costa and Alameda counties, encompassing the communities of Alamo, Antioch, Bay Point, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, Clayton, Concord, Danville, Discovery Bay, Dublin, Lafayette, Livermore, Moraga, Oakley, Orinda, Pittsburg, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek.
The northern portion of the District joins many Delta communities, while the central and southern portions link key Contra Costa and Alameda suburban communities with job centers. This District includes many regional parks and wilderness areas. |
