| Senator Max Burns, a Republican, represents Georgia's
23rd Senate District. Elected in November 2020, he serves
Burke, Emanuel, Glascock, Jefferson, Jenkins, McDuffie,
Screven, Taliaferro, and Warren counties, as well as parts
of Columbia and Richmond counties.
Sen. Burns is Chairman of the Senate Committee on
Higher Education. He also serves as an Ex-Officio
member of the Senate Committees on Appropriations, Ethics, and Transportation and is a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development and Tourism, and Children and Families.
A Georgia native, Sen. Burns was born in Millen and earned his undergraduate degree from the Georgia
Institute of Technology in 1973. He completed his MBA from Georgia State University in 1977 and his Ph.D. in
1987. Before his career in higher education, Sen. Burns served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He then became a
professor of information systems at Georgia Southern University, teaching both domestically and
internationally as a Fulbright Scholar.
Sen. Burns furthered his career in information management, working with major organizations such as
Gulfstream Aerospace, Grinnell Corporation, Oxford Industries, and the North American Mission Board of the
Southern Baptist Convention.
His public service began in the early 1990s when he was elected to the Screven County Board of
Commissioners, where he served for six years until 1998. In 2002, Sen. Burns was elected as the U.S.
Representative for Georgia's 12th Congressional District, serving one term in the U.S. House of
Representatives. He later became dean of the Mike Cottrell College of Business at what is now the University of
North Georgia and served as president of Gordon State College from 2012 to 2017.
Sen. Burns resides in Sylvania, Georgia, with his wife, Lora. They attend Jackson Baptist Church in Sylvania
and have two sons and three grandchildren. |
