Bio

Denyse was born and raised in Skokie and has been a resident for over 30 years. Her father was an engineer who immigrated from China and her mother was an ESL teacher at Mather High School. She attended public schools and graduated from Niles North High School. Afterward, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology from Marquette University and a Master's Degree from the University of Madrid. Denyse taught English and translation abroad, and worked in educational publishing for many years. She is a community leader and activist who has worked on issues that our community cares about, including fighting for a higher minimum wage, paid sick leave, increased transparency, and more citizen participation in our government. Following the Sandy Hook School shooting in 2012, Denyse founded People for a Safer Society, an Illinois nonprofit organization to fight gun violence. She helped pass landmark gun safety legislation, and was instrumental in stopping the opening of a gun shop and range on Howard Street in Niles, near Niles West High School.
