Committee Assignments

State Senator Tom Cullerton has dedicated his life to public service. Before being elected to the Illinois Senate, Cullerton was the Village President of Villa Park where he championed sound fiscal policies, streamlined government and protected working families. During his time in office, Villa Park experienced job creation, balanced its budgets and fully funded its pension system. He draws on his own experiences to improve the lives of people in his district and those throughout Illinois In addition to government services, Cullerton served as an infantryman in the US Army from 1990 to 1993. His military experience earned him a spot on the Task Force on Veterans' Suicide where he heard from veterans, health care professionals and community groups aiming to identify causes of and remedies to the increase of suicides among returning Illinois veterans. Cullerton took charge when the governor failed to remedy the Legionnaires' disease crisis at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy. He passed a series of commonsense reforms that will protect and serve veterans for generations to come throughout the state. As state senator, Cullerton has made DuPage County a leader in government consolidation and efficiency, saving vital taxpayer dollars in the process. He passed bipartisan legislation to allow other counties across the state to adopt these cost-saving measures that originated in DuPage County. Cullerton continues to work with the Better Government Association, recently passing a series of measures to end bloated severance deals for public executives and employees on the taxpayer dime. He also passed legislation to eliminate severance packages for employees that have been fired for misconduct and limit government-paid severance packages to an amount no greater than 20 weeks of compensation. To bring transparency to the governor's yearly budget proposal, Cullerton advanced House Bill 5814, which requires the governor's office to record late interest payments as a separate line item for its appropriations to state agencies. This paints a more accurate picture of the budget and slows the depletion of funding needed to run those agencies. Cullerton believes that Illinois needs to make sure every governor, regardless of political party, does not attempt to hide behind phony numbers. Despite consolidation efforts, Cullerton believes government works best when it is a true representation of the people. He has continued to provide excellent service to DuPage County residents by hosting multiple senior fairs, property tax relief workshops, fraud seminars and town halls throughout his Senate district. He is also involved in many civic organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, Citizen Police Academy and the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce. He also volunteers with the Villa Park Boy Scout troop. Cullerton serves as Chairman of Veteran Affairs and as Vice Chairperson on State Government, Agriculture, Higher Education, Subcommittee on Public Higher Education Administrative Costs, Tuition and Fees, Labor and Telecommunications & Info Technology.
