Bio

State Representative Terri Austin was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2002. She represents the city of Anderson and portions of Madison County. Austin serves as the Democratic Caucus Whip. She serves on the Public Policy; Insurance; and Rules and Legislative Procedures committees. Past committee assignments have included Ways and Means; Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development; and Financial Institutions. She served as chair of the Roads and Transportation committee from 2008 to 2010. She serves as a founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Small Business Caucus. In 2005, she authored Indiana's landmark law to protect small business from government over-regulation and bureaucratic red tape. In 2007, she was given the Guardian of Small Business award from the National Federation of Independent Business for her leadership and support of small business issues. In 2009, she was awarded the Friend of Economic Development by the Indiana Economic Development Association for her work to create new incentives and investment in technology and high-tech businesses. In 2014, she was recognized as the Champion of Small Business by the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce. Austin has also been recognized as Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Operators, the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, the Indiana Chiropractors Association and the Indiana Foreign Teachers Association. She is a founding board member of Hoosier Women Forward, an organization dedicated to training women to assume positions of leadership and influence in community, government and political organizations. In addition to her legislative responsibilities, Austin served as a full-time and adjunct professor of education at Anderson University from 2003 to 2011. Prior to joining Anderson University, she served as a classroom teacher and administrator for Anderson Community Schools for 20 years. She is also a past member of the Region 5 Workforce Development Board for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. She is married to Michael, an attorney in Anderson. They are the parents of two adult sons. She is a member of the Park Place Church of God in Anderson. She is a member of the board of trustees of Flagship Enterprise Center, a state-recognized Certified Technology Park.
