Bio

Senator Bret Allain's roots run deep in south Louisiana, and he's been proudto call "Sportsman's Paradise" his home all of his life. Raised in Jeanerette, LA, Bret startedworking on the family farm in St. Mary and IberiaParishes with his father at the age of 13, and one ofthe many lessons he learned was that hard work anddetermination can solve many of the problems we face inour everyday lives. Throughout his adult life, Bret hasgrown many businesses that operate in the agriculturaland energy industries by applying many of the lessons helearned while growing up. As a farmer and businessman, Bret knowsthat our economy has seen its share of good times aswell as bad. Sugar prices and oil prices have one thingin common. They both have seen highs and lows throughthe years. Louisiana's budget is no different. Highs and lows litter the landscape of our state'shistory. For far too long, though, our state budget hasnot matched the success of our overall economy. Yearafter year, it seems that we are plugging holes just toget by. True structural reform is needed to get thestate's fiscal house in order. We can't continue tokick the can down the road. Our economy is built on the industriesBret knows so well. Agriculture and energy are the twolargest sectors of our state's economy. Because of thisexperience, his background has served him well while inBaton Rouge. Since being elected to the State Senatein 2011, he has shown his leadership on committees vitalto District 21 and Louisiana as a whole. During his first term, Bret was the ViceChairman of the Agriculture committee and was a memberof the Natural Resources, Health and Welfare, andFinance committees. As Bret entered his second term, he wasappointed to reprise his role on the Finance Committee, this time as Vice Chairman. He was also reappointed toserve on the Agriculture and Natural ResourcesCommittees and will serve for the first time on theCommerce Committee. As senator, Bret has also shown awillingness to work with members of both parties. He'salways believed that good ideas are not exclusive toRepublicans or Democrats, and he hopes to never see atime where the gridlock of Washington, D.C. makes itsway into our state capital. After four years in office, Bret looks tocontinue building on the good work accomplished by theLegislature as he prepares for a second term now thatthe people of District 21 have afforded him this greatopportunity and honor. Bret is a graduate of Louisiana StateUniversity and is a member of Sacred Heart CatholicChurch in Baldwin. He has been married for 31 years tothe former Kim McElveen, and they are the proud parentsof three children- Quin Elise, Emma Marie, and RobertLebreton. Early in 2015, Bret and Kim were alsoblessed with their first grandchild, a girl, FloraKimberly Bixler, the daughter of their eldest, Quin, andher husband, Harrison. They make their home in Adeline.
