Bio

State Rep. Brian Newberry has announced he is seeking re-election to the District 48 seat representing North Smithfield and Burrillville. Newberry is a Republican and former House Minority Leader who has represented District 48 for 12 years. In a press release issued last week, he said he hopes to continue putting forward an agenda of lower taxes, less regulatory red tape and overall less government. "I maintain, as I always have, that we do not have a taxing problem in this state, but a spending problem" said Newberry. "I have always opposed tax increases and supported attempts to reign in bloated government spending. I have fought to eliminate the abuse-ridden legislative grant program and been a consistent advocate against growth in government generally and in attempting to get my legislative colleagues to adopt a different perspective on many issues." Newberry warned the economic fallout of COVID-19 could cause many elected officials to make "short-sighted budgetary decisions" that could have harmful long-term implications. "Now more than ever we need elected officials who advocate for policies aimed at economic growth, job creation and lowering the cost of living and doing business in Rhode Island" he said. Newberry also noted his stance against unnecessary regulations on small business and his six years serving as House Minority Leader between 2011 and 2017. "I believe I have been a consistent advocate for the people of our rural corner of the state and I am hopeful that the people of North Smithfield and Burrillville have been happy with my efforts on their behalf and will see fit to return me to office this fall" he said. Newberry lives in North Smithfield. He is married to Beth Newberry and has three children.
