Bio

Since my election to the Utah State Legislature in 2008, I've been advocating for the principles that you value. In addition to representing the people of House District 28, I also serve as House Minority Leader. In this position, it is my duty to serve as the voice of the Legislature's "loyal opposition" speaking on behalf of Democrats and our policies, and working to protect our rights. I'm a proud father of four daughters and long-time resident of District 28. For the last 30 years, I've loved meeting those in our community and learning about their lives. Ask anyone in our family and they'll tell you we don't get to where we are in life without the influences and assistance of family, friends, neighbors and teachers. This community has given so much to us and we are tremendously grateful for everything and do our best to give back. I am so inspired by my four daughters, each of whom has graduated from, or is attending, the University of Utah. Their involvement in church, school, and community service shows me that our world is in good hands. I look forward to many more years of giving back to the community that has given so much to my family. When I'm not at the Utah State Legislature, I'm an attorney practicing law here in Salt Lake City. My practice centers on plaintiffs who were improperly denied health, life, or disability insurance. I've tried over 25 bench and jury trials in my career, and received over 50 appellate decisions from state and federal courts. I'm also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Juris Doctorate May 1985, University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law Roger J. Traynor Moot Court Society- Winner, 1983-1984, Chancellor, 1984-1985 Undergraduate Degree, University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah President, Utah Association for Justice, 2007-2008 AV rating in Martindale-Hubbell 1999 to present "You Represented Me" award from Represent Me Utah Recognition from Utah League of Cities and Towns for local advocacy Utah Business Coalition Legislative Champion Award, 2015 and 2016
