Bio

Elected to the State Senate in 2018, Kathy Bernier represents Wisconsin's 23rd Senate District, including all of Chippewa and Clark Counties and parts of Eau Claire, Dunn, Marathon, Wood, Jackson and Trempealeau Counties. Kathy serves as chair of the Senate Committee on Elections, Ethics and Rural Issues and vice-chair of the Committee on Local Government, Small Business, Tourism and Workforce Development. Prior to her service in the State Senate, Kathy was elected to four terms in the State Assembly and served for more than a decade as Chippewa County Clerk. Deep Roots in Western Wisconsin Born in Eau Claire, Kathy grew up in Lake Hallie and graduated from Chippewa Falls Senior High School. Kathy raised her family in the Chippewa Valley and today she lives just a few miles from where she grew up. A Dedicated Mom with a History of Hard Work As a mother of three, Kathy worked part-time jobs to make ends meet. At 37, when her kids began school, Kathy went back to school herself, enrolling as a non-traditional student at UW-Eau Claire. Balancing waitressing three nights a week with a full load of classes, Kathy did homework in between shuttling her kids to hockey, wrestling, figure skating and gymnastics practices. After years of hard work and Kathy received her diploma with her kids by her side. An Independent Voice When Kathy learned about problems in her local government, she made her concerns known publicly. While this didn't win her many friends with local politicians, Kathy wanted to do the right thing so she launched a campaign to clean up the mess. Once elected Chippewa County Clerk, Kathy reformed the office and cut costs while increasing services. Kathy won the trust of county residents, winning reelection six times and serving as Chippewa County Clerk for more than a decade. Committed to Our Communities In 2010, Kathy decided to take her experience and common sense reforms to the State Capitol by running for the State Assembly. Once elected, Kathy served as an independent voice for our area, taking on Madison special interests, reforming government and helping turn the state's multi-billion dollar budget deficit into a surplus. Kathy successfully fought for more funding for schools, access to rural broadband and advanced training programs for local workers. Kathy is the state director of the National Foundation for Women Legislators and is a member of Wisconsin Women in Government among many other public service organizations. She lives in Chippewa Falls where she's active in her church, various community groups and the lives of her three children and six grandchildren.
