THIS WEEK IN SOUTH CAROLINA
Governor Nikki Haley (Clemson '94) delivered her annual State of the State address on Wednesday evening, January 21st.  The prepared text of the Governor's remarks may be found here.
 
CLEMSON UNIVERSITY HOUSE WAYS & MEANS BUDGET SUBCOMMITTEE HEARINGS
President Jim Clements and Brett Dalton, Vice President for Finance and Operations, gave Clemson's Education and General (E&G) budget presentation to the Ways and Means Higher Education Subcommittee on Tuesday, January 20th.  

Clemson Public Service and Agriculture's budget hearing was held Wednesday, January 21st before the Economic Development and Natural Resources Subcommittee.  President Clements and Dr. George Askew (Vice President for PSA) delivered Clemson PSA's presentation before the Subcommittee.  

The State Budget Process
The House Ways and Means Committee (where the appropriations bill originates) will continue agency budget subcommittee hearings through January.

Membership of House and Senate Education Committees Announced
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce have announced the committee rosters for the new session of Congress. In the Senate, Lamar Alexander (R-TN) will chair the HELP Committee, with Patty Murray (D-WA) now serving as ranking member. John Kline (R-MN) will remain chair of the House Education Committee, with Bobby Scott (D-VA) becoming ranking member. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) and Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) will continue to serve on these two important committees.  

Senate Appropriations Committee Announces Subcommittee Chairs 
Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS) officially announced the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee Chairs for the 114th Congress. Subcommittee memberships are still being formulated and will be announced soon. Congratulations to Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who will now serve as Chairman of the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations Subcommittee. 

New Committee on Federal Research Regulations 
The Committee on Federal Research Regulations and Reporting Requirements has been created under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Science, Technology, and Law and the Board of Higher Education and the Workforce. This committee will conduct a study of federal regulations and reporting requirements, focusing specifically on research universities.

Members of the South Carolina 4-H Hippology and Presentation Teams were honored on the floor of the South Carolina House of Representatives on Wednesday, January 21st.  The Hippology (Equine Science) team won the National Championship in November at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky. The Presentation Team placed fifth nationally.  Representative Gary Clary Clemson '70 (R-Pickens) presented the teams and their coaches with a House Resolution in recognition of these accomplishments.  Earlier in the day, the teams were presented with a Senate Resolution by Senator Thomas Alexander Clemson '78 (R-Oconee).

4-H programs are supported through the Cooperative Extension Service and Clemson PSA.
